Sotomayor is an immigrant. Puerto Rico is part of the USA. Sotomayor and her parents are US citizens and were born as such.
Sotomayor is a single mother. Sotomayor was married. She has no children.
Sotomayor was raised by a single mother. Her parents were married, her father died when Sotomayor was 9. She was raised by a widowed mother.
Not that any of these SHOULD be a problem, but her detractors are obviously going for the death by a thousand cuts approach. Expect every racial, gender and political stereotype to be hurled, no matter how ridiculous or contradictory, because they have no good reason to base their opposition on.
If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the most experienced justice to be appointed to the Supreme Court in 70 years. At a time when judicial experience is sorely lacking on said court, due to the Republican's religious-based appointments, her guidance is dearly needed. She's a centrist, appointed by Bush I and confirmed twice by the senate with the majority of Republican senators voting yes. Her opinions have agreed with her fellow Republican jurists for 95% of her cases.
So why is Rush calling her "the most liberal of Obama's candidates"? Why is he saying that her appointment would be disasterous? Is it possibly because unlike Roberts and Alito she's actually qualified and will uphold the law? Or is it just because he feels his balls shriveling with every new Obama success and needs to do something, anything to feel less impotent?
Personally I welcome a centrist judge who is capable of understanding that stripping, flashing your vagina and doing the hokey-pokey in front of two school officials is a little bit more distrubing for a young teenage girl than changing in a locker room for a young boy. I would not have thought it would require a woman to see this, but given the apparent idiocity of our current male justices I was apparently very wrong.
Good luck Sotomayor.
